Chapter 44

Helping the Police

After the two-hundred dollar tip I’d given Steven for driving AnnaSophia and her two companions home, he jumped at the chance to take me to the police station. To his credit, he drove without bombarding me with questions about our destination. He did, however, keep shifting his gaze from the street to me.

During our stop at the fourth light, he said, “Is there a problem with one of the guys I drove home, Dr. Romanov?”

Caught off guard, I said, “When I gave you your tip, you didn’t mention a problem.”

“Well, it wasn’t a really problem, sir. But the taller one was like a wild man in the backseat. Raving and ranting. Calling you a bas—calling you names. I figured he was drunk.”

“What did the lady and the other man say?”

“The lady tried to calm him. The other man sorta sat there—not saying much.”

My heat did a little tip-tap. Did AnnaSophia try to defend me? “We’re going to the police because Dr. Mactavish has disappeared.”

“What?” Steven gave the car too much gas and the rear wheels spun. “Sorry, sir.” He eased up on the gas. After we cleared the green light, he said, “I’m—surprised, I guess.”

“Yes, everyone is. We think he’s been working too much. The stress finally did him in.”

“I’d agree with that assessment. He scared me. I thought he might jump out of the car . . .”

“Would you be willing to tell the police what you witnessed?” I kept my voice even so I didn’t give away my eagerness.

“Yessir. Yes, I would. If that would be of help . . .”

“I think it would be very helpful. At this point, we need all the witnesses we can find.”

“I’ll have to call the hotel. I’m the only driver on duty today.”

“Let me take care of the small problem. I’m sure the concierge will agree you won’t have many requests in this weather.” Owning the penthouse should carry some privileges.

The concierge fell all over himself to accommodate my needs as he phrased my demand. I fully expected the police to show the same kiss-ass toadying in light of my voluntary cooperation.
